Advent Calendar - Spicy Black Bean Soup - Dec. 14

If you enjoy soups in winter like I do, you will enjoy this spicy and warming Black Bean Soup.  If you do not have time or inclination to make your own, you can enjoy Backyard Patch Bean Soups instead, we make a Pasta Fazuul, Multi Bean, and Good Luck soup in a jar among others. 

Spicy Black Bean Soup in a jar

  • 1 wide mouth quart jar
  • 3 cups black beans (1 ½ pounds)
  • 1 cup dried navy beans (1/2 pound)
  • 12 by 12 inch parchment
  • Rubber band
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbls onion flakes
  • 2 Tbls cumin
  • ¼ to ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp celery seed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tbls chili powder
  • 4 chicken or veggie bouillon cubes

To make Jars: Layer beans in jar using in ¾ cup black 1/3 cup white, then finish with black.

Roll the spices up in parchment and secure with rubber band and place on top of beans. Place lid on jar and attach cooking instructions.

Directions: In a large stock pot, combine the beans, spice packet contents and 12 cups of water.  Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 1 ½ to 2 hours, stirring occasionally until the beans are tender and the soup is thick. You might need to add more water as the beans cook.  Adjust seasonings if necessary.  Serve topped with sour cream and diced avocado.  Great with tortilla chips or cornbread on the side.
